French Legal Translation Services in Dubai

Dubai’s French-speaking population is far larger than the number of French nationals suggests. Lebanese, Moroccan, Algerian, Tunisian, Ivorian, Senegalese and Canadian residents all arrive with documents issued in French, and so do a large share of the companies operating out of France, Belgium, Switzerland and Luxembourg. What those documents have in common is that a UAE court, ministry or licensing authority will only work from a certified Arabic version stamped by a translator accredited with the UAE Ministry of Justice.

French legal documents are unusually formulaic, and that is exactly where inexperienced translation fails. A livret de famille, an acte de naissance issued by a mairie, and a deed drawn up by a notaire each carry a fixed legal structure whose parts have specific consequences. Translating the words without carrying the structure across produces an Arabic text that reads fluently and tells the receiving officer nothing they can rely on.

• Civil status records — acte de naissance, acte de mariage, acte de décès and the livret de famille, for residency files, family visas and personal status matters.
• Notarial deeds drawn up by a notaire — powers of attorney, property deeds, marriage contracts and succession documents.
• Court documents — judgments, jugement de divorce, ordonnance and procedural filings.
• Criminal record extracts — extrait de casier judiciaire, for employment and residency files.
• Academic records — relevé de notes, diplôme, baccalauréat and university transcripts for equivalency.
• Company documents — extrait Kbis, statuts, board minutes, commercial contracts and financial statements for DED and free-zone filings.

UAE courts including the Rental Disputes Centre, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation, notary publics, the Department of Economy and Tourism and free-zone authorities such as DMCC and JAFZA, universities and equivalency bodies, and French-speaking consulates in the UAE. • Institutional titles have no literal Arabic twin. A notaire is not the same office as a UAE notary public, a greffier is not a judge, and a tribunal de grande instance is a specific tier of court. We render the function accurately and keep the original title alongside it, rather than substituting a UAE office that carries different powers.
• The apostille and the translation are separate things. Documents from France and several other French-speaking states often arrive with an apostille. That certificate authenticates the original; it does not replace the certified Arabic translation, and it needs translating too because it carries stamps and reference numbers the receiving officer checks.
• Accented characters and name order. Names carrying accents, particles such as de and d’, and hyphenated compound forenames must be transliterated to match the passport exactly. A mismatch of one character between the translation and the passport is one of the most common reasons a file is returned.
• Dates and numbers. French documents use day/month/year and a comma as the decimal separator. We keep the value unambiguous in Arabic so a figure is never read an order of magnitude out.
• Marginal annotations. French civil status records carry mentions marginales — later notes recording marriage, divorce or death. These are legally operative and are translated with the record, not skipped as decoration.
