French Legal Translation Requirements for UAE Authorities

If you hold documents issued in French and you are dealing with a UAE court, ministry, licensing authority or embassy, the requirement is narrower than most people expect: the authority will work from an Arabic version certified by a translator accredited with the UAE Ministry of Justice. How good your French is, whether the document is already bilingual, or whether a translator in France stamped it does not substitute for that.

What “certified” means here, and what it does not

Certification in the UAE attaches to the translator, not to the document and not to an agency letterhead. An accredited legal translator produces the Arabic text, stamps it, and takes responsibility for its correspondence to the source. That stamp is what a counter clerk, a case officer or a judge looks for.

Two things it is commonly confused with:

  • A sworn translation done in France. A traducteur assermenté is sworn before a French court of appeal. That authority is French; it does not carry into the UAE system, so the document normally still has to be translated here.
  • An apostille. An apostille authenticates the original document and the signature on it. It says nothing about language, and it does not remove the need for a certified Arabic version. In practice the apostille itself is also translated, because it carries an issuing authority, a number and a date that the receiving officer checks.
The practical rule: authenticate the original first, then translate — so the certified Arabic version covers the apostille and any legalisation stamps as well. Confirm the order with the authority receiving your file, because a minority of departments accept the reverse.

Which French documents come up most often in the UAE

DocumentTypical UAE useWhat is easy to get wrong
Acte de naissanceResidency and family visa files, school admissionMarginal annotations are legally operative and must be translated
Livret de familleProving family relationshipsSubmitting only the first page — the later completed pages are the evidence
Acte de mariage / jugement de divorcePersonal status matters, sponsorshipCourt chamber names rendered as UAE equivalents that carry different powers

Where the translation actually fails

The rejections cluster in four places, and none of them is vocabulary.

1. Names

Accented characters, particles such as de and d’, and hyphenated compound forenames have to match the passport exactly. A single character of difference between the certified translation and the passport is one of the most common reasons a file is handed back.

2. Institutions rendered as false equivalents

A notaire is not a UAE notary public; a greffier is not a judge; a tribunal de grande instance is a specific tier of court. We render the function accurately and keep the original title beside it rather than substituting an Emirati office with different powers.

3. Partial translation

Stamps, marginal notes and anything printed on the reverse are part of the document. A translation that silently omits them is incomplete on its face.

4. Numbers and dates

French documents use day/month/year and a comma as the decimal separator. We keep values unambiguous so a figure is never read an order of magnitude out.

What to send us, and what happens next

  1. A clear scan or photo of every page, including seals and the reverse side.
  2. The passport page of each person named, so spelling matches the rest of your file.
  3. The authority the document is going to.
  4. Your deadline, if you have one.

We confirm scope, price and delivery date — normally within one working hour — then an accredited translator who works in this pair produces the Arabic version, which is checked against the source for names, numbers, dates and seals before the stamp is applied.

On accreditation of legal translators, see the UAE Ministry of Justice. Requirements for a specific submission are set by the receiving authority and should be confirmed with them.

Common questions

French legal translation in the UAE — frequently asked questions

The questions clients ask before sending a French document.

Is a sworn translation from France accepted in the UAE?
Generally no. A traducteur assermenté is sworn before a French court of appeal, and that authority does not carry into the UAE system. Submissions to UAE courts, ministries and government departments normally require translation by a translator accredited with the UAE Ministry of Justice.
Does an apostille remove the need for translation?
No. The apostille authenticates the original document and the signature on it; it says nothing about language. A certified Arabic version is still required, and the apostille is normally translated with the document.
Do I need to translate the whole livret de famille?
The completed pages, yes. Those later entries record marriage, divorce and children, and they are usually the reason the document is being submitted.
My French document is already bilingual French-English. Is that enough?
For a UAE court, ministry or licensing authority, usually not. Those bodies work in Arabic, and an English column does not satisfy the requirement for a certified Arabic version.
Which comes first, attestation or translation?
For a foreign-issued document, authentication usually comes first so the certified translation can cover the attestation stamps. Confirm with the receiving authority, as some departments accept the reverse order.
How long does a French document take?
A single clear civil status record or criminal record extract is usually same working day or next. Notarial deeds, judgments and company packs are given a confirmed date once we have seen the page count.
